When Does the Groom Kiss the Bride?

When Does the Groom Kiss the Bride?

  • At large formal church weddings it is not usual for the groom to kiss the bride at the altar after the clergyman has congratulated the couple at the end of the ceremony. But if the couple is to receive in the church vestibule or if the marriage takes place at home, the groom always kisses the bride immediately following the ceremony, as no one may kiss the bride before he does. The clergyman, if he has long been an intimate of the family, may be the next to have the privilege, but on the receiving line  the bride is kissed only by those who really have the right to offer this intimate form of salutation. Gay blades and old codgers, impelled to kiss the bride merely because they think custom sanctions it, should check their exuberance and wait for the suggestion, it any, to come from the bride- or the groom. The latter might be heard to say, "Darling, this is Alfred, my old roommate - remember - and he's dying to kiss you, of course. So I'll permit it - this once!"
